Aviation Pathway
Course Catalog
Aviation Technology 1
Recommended Preparation: None
Grade Level: 9
Length of Course: 2 semesters = 10 credits
Aviation 1 is a first year CTE course introducing aviation and engineering career opportunities. Using “Hands On” flight simulator training, students apply classroom math, science and engineering in project-based aircraft operations. Students will be capable of explaining how and airplane is constructed and powered to fly and support this with fact and formulas. Exploring the math and science in aviation leads to successful careers in aviation, coding, engineering, aviation repairs, air traffic control, logistics, aviation instrument repair or aviation business operations. Students work in Flight Crews of 3 students in both classroom and simulation activities to promote collaborative learning. Understanding the influence of Engineering Design on the history of aviation can explain how trial and error and engineering solved complex problems. Students will have the opportunity to sit for the FAA Drone Pilot or Private Pilot license. Mentors will be invited into the classroom and this course will offer trips to local airfields and museums helping to ignite further careers.

Aviation Technology 2
Recommended Preparation: None
Grade Level: 10
Length Of Course: 2 semesters = 10 credits
This course will introduce students to basic aircraft and UAS structures and their major components, principles of flight, and the fundamental physical laws affecting flight. Students will learn about basic aerodynamics and forces that act on aircraft in flight. This course will also introduce the main systems found on large and small airplanes and UAS.

Aviation Technology 3
Recommended Preparation: Aviation Technology 2
Grade Level: 11, 12
Length Of Course: 2 semesters = 10 credits
This course is foundational for both manned and unmanned aviation, and will prepare students to take either of two Federal Aviation Administration tests: the Private Pilot Knowledge Test or the Part 107 Remote Pilot Knowledge Test. Topics include: preflight procedures, airspace, radio communications, aviation phraseology, regulations, airport operations, aviation safety, weather, cockpit management and emergency procedures.

Aviation Technology 4
Recommended Preparation: Aviation Technology 2
Grade Level: 11, 12
Length Of Course: 2 semesters = 10 credits
PMA Aviation 4 is the Capstone course of the Aviation Pathway. The purpose of this course is the completion of Aviation Ground School to support and foster the developing students' growing knowledge and interest in aviation. Upon successful completion, cadets will receive formal certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) via Federal Aviation Regulation (FAR) Part 61.3, ground school certificate, and FAR Part 107, remote pilot certificate with a small UAS rating. The ground school certificate enables cadets to pursue private pilot training in an aircraft with a certified flight instructor (CFI). The remote pilot certificate with a small UAS rating enables cadets to operate UAS weighing less than 55 pounds on takeoff.
